Joaquín Herrera Macias
was born in Alcalá de los Gazules, in the province of Cádiz, southern Andalucía.
Joaquín Herrera is an exceptional case, mainly for two reasons. First of all, it is extraordinary to find a flamenco artist that plays the guitar and also sings on a very high level. These unique qualities turn him into a perfect flamenco teacher. But what makes Joaquín incomparable is the fact that he is ‘flamenco’. Everything he says, does or thinks is flamenco. His passion to teach motivated students the art he’s devoted to makes it an absolute privilege to be an apprentice at his school.
He started his guitar skills at the early age of 9 in his homeland Alcalá de los Gazules. From an early age, he did what every flamenco guitarist should do: accompaniment to singers and dancers. An important person in his learning process was a gipsy called Diego Montoya, with whom he has played along for many years. His art and temper interpreting flamenco singing is just amazing. Nevertheless, this wonderful artist, as it is the case for so many flamenco artists, never got to recording because of his loyalty to real flamenco.
Other singers he accompanied were ‘el Tiburón de Alcalá’, Ramón de la Isla and a brother of Camarón, 'El Pijote'.
